About Me
Tara L. Sparks is a music teacher at Tavelli Elementary School in the Poudre School District (PSD) in Fort Collins, Colorado where she teaches kindergarten through fifth grade music. Formerly she has taught music at Beattie Elementary, Irish Elementary and orchestra and band to students in grades four through eight at the School for the Creative and Performing Arts in Lexington, Kentucky. She received her Bachelors in Music Education from Morehead State University and her Masters in Music Education with Kodaly Certification from Colorado State University. She has made presentations at Kodaly workshops in Denver, the Colorado Music Educators Association Convention (CMEA), and the Kodaly Master’s Program at Colorado State University. She has written for the Kodaly Envoy International Journal, and has presented research at the National Conference of the Organization of American Kodaly Educators (OAKE). She has been a Talent Judge at the Larimer County’s 4-H Performing Arts Contest and a representative for Muramatsu Flutes. She is also the Chair for Music for the 31 Elementary Schools in Poudre School District. The inspiration to create an ensemble capable of performing at the state convention level came while at an annual music convention (KMEA) in Kentucky during which Ms. Sparks observed a “multiple-school” ensemble comprised of musicians ages 7-12 perform called the Leopard Percussionists. Moving forward in time, Ms. Sparks’ quest to create a fun, spirited, musically literate percussion ensemble for grades 4-5 became a reality at Beattie Elementary when they performed at CMEA in 2008. Now her dream continues at Tavelli Elementary with an outstanding group of 4th and 5th grade Little Kids Rock Modern Band and a huge Musical Theatre Troupe.
